About the System

Mental health is a basic human right for all people. Everyone, whoever and wherever they are, has a right to the highest attainable standard of mental health. Good mental health is vital to our overall health and well-being.Mental health conditions are also affecting an increasing number of adolescents and young people. Considering the importance of mental health among college students Sree Sankara College, Kalady has initiated a student support system for students well-being. This initiative aims to gratify the mental health needs and psychological well-being of the students and renders timely help to those in need, irrespective of their issues – academic, personal, interpersonal or familial. This service is also extended to teaching and non-teaching staffs of the institution.

In 2023, Sree Sankara College has associated with Jeevani project by the Department of Collegiate Education Government of Kerala, which focuses on the mental well-being of the students in the government colleges in Kerala. Jeevani- centre for students’ wellbeing intends to improve awareness and promotion of mental health among college students along with ensuring early identification of psychological issues among these students.The Jeevani counsellor will be with the students in their journey in college, such a psychosocial help would definitely prove to be of immense benefit to the students.

Procedure of seeking help

A student in need of support may be referred to the Student Support System by themselves, teachers, friends, parents or guardians.  After a detailed evaluation of the student seeking help; services like counselling, psychotherapy, and behavioural interventions are provided depending upon the nature of the problem. A small proportion of students requiring pharmacological interventions are referred to concerned medical practionaers after evaluation. The above services are available during working hours on all working days. In case of emergency or unexpected suspension of classes, the service is available through online platform.
